Sanitation at work is important to prevent the spread of disease

When you think of workers' compensation, you might think of workers who suffer an injury due to an accident. This isn't the only type of issue that can be covered by this program. Workers who suffer from diseases and conditions related to employment can also benefit from what workers' compensation has to offer.

One thing that many employees don't realize is that employers are required to provide them with a dedicated space to use the restroom, as well as potable water and sanitization options to use when necessary. The guidelines covering these areas of employment rights are handled by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The need for a restroom is two-fold. First, it provides a place for employees to handle nature's call without having to worry about bacteria being introduced into the rest of the work space. Additionally, it helps ensure that workers don't end up with urinary tract infections or intestinal issues due to trying to "hold it in" due to lack of facilities.

The restroom should include a place to wash hands. This is especially important when the worker will handle food or anything that is going to come into contact with others. Washing their hands prevents the spread of fecal matter and other bacteria.

Potable water is critical to help workers avoid dehydration while they work. People who are out in the elements or work in areas that must remain at a warmer temperature are at an increased risk of heat exhaustion, so having water readily available is necessary.

As you can see, the need for potable water and restroom facilities go hand-in-hand. If you suffered from a medical issue due to lack of sanitary conditions at your work site, you might be able to seek workers' compensation benefits.
