As a pedestrian, the last thing you want to deal with is getting hit by a driver. While you may feel that it’s out of your hands, the truth is that there are a few ways you can prevent accidents, so you stay safe. Pedestrian accidents can be a result of a driver or pedestrian making an error, so making sure you follow the traffic laws dramatically reduces your risk of injury.
What can you do to avoid traffic accidents? There are at least four different things you can try. Here are some suggestions.
1. Don’t jaywalk
The first thing you should stop doing is crossing the street where there is no crosswalk or intersection. When you jaywalk, you’re more likely to get hit by a car because the drivers aren’t expecting to see a pedestrian in the roadway. If you have no other choice but to cross, make sure you look both ways and wait for traffic to pass before you continue to cross.
2. Improve your visibility
Another thing to do is to increase your visibility. Wear white or bright clothing to stand out. At night, wear reflective clothing or carry a flashlight to make sure you’re seen.
3. Make eye contact
Next, make eye contact. It’s a good idea to look at the driver’s side of the vehicle and attempt to get the driver’s attention. If he or she acknowledges you, it’s probably safe to cross the road. Make sure the vehicle is slowing before you attempt to cross.
4. Don’t get distracted
Finally, don’t get distracted. Distractions make it hard for you to see if a car is traveling too fast or if someone has decided to make a turn. Stay off your phone or other devices until you safely cross the street.
These are a few tips to help you prevent pedestrian accidents. By being cautious, you can lower your risk all around.
