Motorcycle safety during Labor Day weekend

If you’re asking yourself, “how did the summer go by so fast?” you are certainly not alone. While there are officially three more weeks of summer, Labor Day weekend is widely regarded as the last summer holiday.  For many, this may be the last chance to have a weekend riding getaway until next spring. With more cars expected on the road this coming weekend, it is important for motorcycle riders, to take the following tips to heart.

Don’t drink and ride – It may be obvious, but alcohol affects a rider’s judgment and balance; two things that are essential for safely operating a motorcycle. Also the additional patrols out to catch drunk drivers are also meant to take impaired motorcyclists off the road as well. So don’t drink and ride.

Obey the speed laws – Some riders cannot get enough of the quick acceleration and nimbleness that comes with riding a motorcycle. But higher speeds increase the likelihood of being in an accident, especially considering the number of bad driver that will be on the road. So obeying speed laws is critical.

Know your bike’s capabilities– Labor Day weekend may not be the ideal time to embark on a weekend journey to break in your new motorcycle. It may take time to get used to the acceleration and handling.

Stay out of blind spots – A high number of car-motorcycle accidents occur because a driver simply did not see the rider. So while drivers definitely have an obligation to look out for motorcycles, riders must be careful about staying out of drivers’ blind spots.

If you have questions about your rights and options after a motorcycle accident, an experienced personal injury attorney can advise you.
