Collision takes life of Lumberton woman

| Oct 28, 2014 | Uncategorized |

According to law enforcement authorities, a 62-year-old Lumberton woman died as a result of injuries received in a collision with another car. The accident happened on Oct. 23 on N.C. 72 about six miles east of Lumberton around 3:40 p.m.

North Carolina Highway Patrol officers reported that the woman’s 2009 Mercury was struck head-on by a 1992 Lincoln traveling in the opposite direction. Authorities believe the woman was traveling west on the highway near Collins Drive and the 25-year-old man driving the Lincoln was heading east.

The woman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was reportedly traveling at or near the posted speed limit of 55 mph. The man was said to have been driving at approximately 75 mph when his car ran off the right side of the road, causing him to lose control. According to police, the man’s car then crossed the center line, striking the woman’s vehicle head-on and killing her. His car landed in a ditch, while the woman’s car stopped on the shoulder of the road. The man, who was wearing a seat belt, is currently pending charges. Police believe careless driving and speeding were the causes of the accident.

When someone is killed in an auto accident due to the carelessness or reckless behavior of another driver, that party may face both civil and criminal liability. While these two are non-exclusive, the result of a criminal trial may be used to support evidence of negligence in a wrongful death civil suit. Families of people who are wrongfully killed in an accident may wish to consult with a personal injury attorney. An attorney may be able to help families recover damages for the losses they’ve suffered as a result of their loved one’s death.
