Hit-and-run leads to wrongful death of a North Carolina man

With a national push to get healthy, a lot more people are riding their bicycles, either for fun or for their primary form of transportation. With the number of bicycles on the roads increasing, it is important for both cyclists and drivers to be aware of their surroundings and follow road rules. However, accidents between cars and bicycles happen and these accidents often result in serious injury or fatality to the cyclists. A recent hit-and-run incident between a truck and a bicycle is to blame for the seemingly wrongful death of a North Carolina man.

The accident occurred earlier this month in High Point. The cyclist, a local firefighter, was hit by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle on a local street. The cyclist was transported to a local medical facility for treatment, however, he died from his injuries. This is a tragic loss for his family and the community. He had worked with the local fire department since 1997.

The driver of the pickup apparently fled the scene after the incident but was later found and arrested. He has been charged for the hit-and-run, which is a felony offense. He was later released on a $2,500 bond. His court date has not been announced.

Families of victims killed in hit-and-run accidents may be left with a lot of questions and given few answers. These accidents are emotionally heartbreaking and may also cause a financial strain for those left dealing with the aftermath. Funeral expenses, medical expenses, loss of current and future income and so on come at a significant cost to the victim's family. If the family of the victim in this case chooses, they may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim against the driver. If the individual is found liable for the death of the victim, a North Carolina civil court could grant the victim's family financial compensation for the losses they have incurred as a result of the incident.
