Passenger killed in 2-vehicle collision

According to reports, a 51-year-old Albemarle woman was killed in a head-on collision that occurred on Dec. 4. North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers reported that the accident happened on U.S. 52 between Albemarle and Norwood around 7:00 p.m.

Officers stated that a 17-year-old man was driving a northbound 2004 Toyota truck on the highway while a 48-year-old man was driving a 1996 Dodge passenger vehicle south, carrying four passengers. The 17-year-old's truck apparently crossed the center line, striking the Dodge head on.

Officers reported that the force of the collision sent both the truck and the car off of the roadway. The woman who died in the accident was a passenger in the Dodge. She was apparently sitting behind the car's driver, who was her husband. The woman's husband as well as the front seat passenger, a 28-year-old woman, were also seriously injured in the collision. It is unknown whether the 17-year-old man or the other two Dodge passengers, both children, sustained any injuries in the accident. According to investigators, the people involved in the accident were all wearing their safety belts. Law enforcement continues to investigate.

Many people are killed each year in car accidents caused by distracted drivers. When a driver looks away from the road to do such things as text or reach for objects, their car may drift into oncoming lanes. When a person dies in such an accident, the victim's family may be able to hold the distracted driver liable for damages through a wrongful death lawsuit. Through a wrongful death case, the family may be able to successfully obtain compensation for their economic and noneconomic losses. People who have lost a loved one in a car accident may benefit by meeting with a personal injury attorney to discuss the matter further.
